Sara played the piano for our wedding, during the drinks before and during the ceremony itself. She played beautifully the songs we selected together and it added a really personal and emotional touch to our day. In the months leading up to the day she was professional and thoughtful with her communication and preparation. On the day she was punctual, careful and played a really stellar set. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending her playing for anyone's wedding day, it really was the cherry on top.

Sara’s work on 4 arrangements for our new play was remarkable. Following my brief outlining themes and lengths required, she came back with beautiful, poignant and strong interpretations that exactly captured the right mood. Her vocals were stunning and the pieces she created were imaginative and ingenious which enhanced the images projected and captivated the attention of our audiences. I’d love to work with Sara again, and would not hesitate to recommend her talent and professionalism.

The Four Seasons Reimagined

The Four Seasons Reimagined is a reinvention of Vivaldi's famous work, interspersed with three vocal songs adapted from poetry by Emily Brontë. Using themes and motifs from the original classical work for strings, I have created 4 tracks that use solo piano and voice only to paint pictures of Spring - soft beginnings and cheering birdsong - Summer - intense heat and sudden storms - Autumn - falling leaves and slowing down and - & Winter - bitter cold and silent, magic snowfall.Available in CD format, on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.

1. Siurana

My opening piece is inspired by the most perfect climbing holiday week in Catalonia, Spain in October 2022. After a long, chaotic stretch of non-stop working in London, peaceful Siurana was the ideal place to recover, reconnect with myself and my friends and climb some excellent rock. After picking up our hire car in Barcelona (and more eggs than you could imagine four people ever getting through in a week) we arrived at our Airbnb and quickly relaxed into a pleasant routine of wake, eat, climb, play board games, sleep, repeat. I distinctly remember enjoying being warm all the time, having only good weather, playing chess, reading books and sunny yoga on the terrace, almost being reduced to tears by the best blood sausage I’ve ever eaten, gazing out over so much empty open space, gorgeous pink sunsets and starry night skies and LOTS of laughter. On this trip one of my friends and I talked about music with unusual time signatures and complex polyrhythms so I have tried to step out of my comfort zone and reflect this in the composition, especially in the opening and closing phrases.

2. Live Free

‘Live Free or Die’ is the official motto of New Hampshire, a state in North Eastern USA which I have been fortunate to be able to visit on average once a year to catch up with friends and family and to enjoy the beautiful landscapes in the White Mountains. This piece is inspired by postcard-perfect snowy winter mornings, cosy afternoons by the fire with a good book and cup of tea, the gentle pace of life, freedom from city noise and the warmth and generosity of the people I have met there and with whom I have formed life-long friendships.Perhaps because I grew up playing a lot of Chopin and enjoying listening to my grandparents play them, waltzes give me great comfort and so it seemed appropriate for this piece to begin with one for a song representing a home away from home, a place where I feel happy and safe.

3. Along The Chevin

For a little over a year I have been taking frequent walks along the Chevin, a lovely ridgeline in Otley Chevin Forest Park in West Yorkshire. I have enjoyed exploring parts of this woodland and heathland area with my partner, his family and our friends but I have also enjoyed wandering along and getting comfortably lost on and off the many footpaths which twist through the trees and up and down the steep hill. I find I have more headspace up here and can find the clarity and focus I need to create solutions to whatever challenges or questions I am facing. Happily, the clear thought that comes to me at the top of the Chevin most often is that all is well and that I should continue and keep going in the direction I am facing. This song had to be a march, echoing the steps of my walk and begins with a simple fairy-like feeling of magic which I perceive when I am amongst the trees, as well as the lightness as my worries dissolve. Later the music becomes more dramatic or cinematic, reflecting the vast and stunning far-reaching views you get when you finally emerge at the top after the uphill slog. The piece finishes in a somewhat open-ended way, suggesting not all challenges are resolved nor questions completely answered but the Chevin will always be there for more walks.

4. Orpierre

I wrote this piece during an eventful climbing trip in May 2023. My partner and I left London one Friday evening and began the long journey south to Orpierre and Céüse to meet friends, climb and live the van-life dream. This dream quickly turned into somewhat of a nightmare when the aforementioned van started shaking, sputtering and smoking near Grenoble, about 2 hours from our final destination. Between far too many Frenglish phone calls and dejected trips to and from the garage, running between multiple car hires and arranging last-minute temporary accommodation, we managed to enjoy the wonderful limestone sport climbing in the area and each other’s company and we are agreed we never want to spend another second in Grenoble. This song started as an improvisation in Orpierre itself as I had packed Petunia (my Roland Go Keys digital piano) in the van and brought it along in the hired car to our temporary accommodation. I had not tried improvising or composing outdoors before which was refreshing, particularly as the view from our apartment’s garden was so beautiful and included live birdsong as accompaniment.

5. Aotearoa

My first big solo trip or my gap year that never was largely took place in Aotearoa, the Māori name for New Zealand. I spent just over 2 months at the end of 2023 on the North & South Islands, spending time by myself, with family friends and making new friends, learning about different cultures, exploring new landscapes and rediscovering old joys. It is hard to sum up such a journey in a few words but the biggest take-aways for me were balance and kindness. I had time and space to reflect on what is most important in life and was fortunate to meet so many wonderful, interesting and kind people who insisted on having me to stay, which was not only more enjoyable than staying in hostels alone but also made the whole trip a lot more affordable! Sharing their lives and homes with me made this trip memorable and better than I could have imagined when planning it out.I left Petunia behind in the UK but there were a surprising amount of opportunities to play the piano on this trip (some were more in tune than others!) so this track is a combination of a few pieces I improvised along the way.

6. Golden Gates

I travelled to New Zealand via San Francisco on the way in and out and my experience of this vibrant, complex city is a tale of two halves. Underestimating what solo travelling really entails and how vast and expensive American cities really are, San Francisco and I got off to a rough start. I wanted to like it but I struggled with navigating to see the famous Golden Gate Bridge on public transport, witnessing the in-your-face wealth inequality and feeling the pressure to have ‘the best trip ever’ whilst simultaneously experiencing intense menstrual cramps and the creeping beginnings of homesickness. On my return leg however I felt I had cracked solo travelling and saw the city in a new light, aided by my companion and her lovely dog Jilly with whom I went for a wonderfully insightful walk through Golden Gate Park. This park is home to all kinds of people, dog-walkers, dancers, skaters, cyclists, art installations, children playing, people singing, flowers growing, leaves turning… and more! I think it might be one of the best parks in the world. This piece was one of the hardest to write and has 3 distinct sections: a repetitive anticipatory dark start without a resolve in which one feels a little lost; a middle section that was almost impossible to play and moves through chords and keys uncharacteristic of my music; and finally ends on something more hopeful and quietly accepting.

7. 29,000 Miles

29,000 miles is roughly the distance I travelled by plane, bus, car, train, ferry, boat, subway and coach from London UK to Milford Sound NZ between September and December 2023. This song is my most experimental by far and cycles bizarrely through the seasons and various themes and motifs from previous tracks on the album to represent the journey from London, UK to Boston, Massachusetts to Portland, Maine, to Thetford, Vermont to San Francisco, California, to Auckland, Piha, Paihia, Hobbiton, Rotorua, Palmerston North and Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand to Picton, Christchurch, Arthur’s Pass, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Akaroa in the South Island and all the way via Christchurch, Auckland, San Francisco and New England back home.

8. Coast To Coast

This piece was specially commissioned by a family member after he and a friend completed the Coast to Coast path in April 2023, a 192-mile walk designed by Alfred Wainwright which starts in St Bee's and crosses Cumbria, the Lake District, Cumbria, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, finishing in Robin Hood's Bay. I had the opportunity to join the team on part of their walk from Keld to Reeth, experiencing all weathers in one day in addition to beautiful landscapes, quaint cottages and adorable lambs. I have since completed the whole walk with my partner in 2026 and hugely recommend it (I also recommend completing it in more than 10 days and without a chest infection!)This piece is significantly longer than the others as it was originally written to accompany a video I put together of the photos and video footage taken of the 12-day walk (although this album version is 8 minutes shorter than the original piece!) I’ve loosely used a Rondo form (ABACADA… etc) to break the piece up into musical sections to match the story told by the video visuals and to mark a new day or section of the path.
